Welcome to the blog! I’m a student teacher at a middle school in the Denver suburbs, where I teach English Language Arts to 6th and 7th graders. After a long journey through several careers, I’m working towards a graduate degree in teaching. As part of that degree, I’m studying contemporary adolescent literature (middle grade through young adult) and reviewing the books I read. This blog is a record of that project, and I hope it can

 

What’s with the name?

One of my 7th-grade students described one of his friends to me this way: “He reads a lot of books. He’s low-key kinda smart.”

As a future English teacher, that’s one of the best things I can hope for from my students. Of course they’re all brilliant, and of course I want them all to be writers. But a world in which more people read books on the sly and try to understand the world a little bit better is one that I can have hope in.
